Abstract

"In 1970, photography curator Peter C. Bunnell organized the exhibition Photography into Sculpture for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, bringing together twenty-three photographers and artists from across the United States as well as Vancouver, British Columbia, whose work challenged accepted practices and categories. The Photographic Object 1970 serves as an exhibition catalogue after the fact, an oral history, and critical reading of exhibitions and experimental photography during the 1960s and 70s. It proposes precedents for contemporary artists who continue to blur the boundaries between photography and other art mediums."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

This book, illustrated by 450 images, presents the works of 300 women photographers from around the world, from the invention of the medium until the dawn of the twenty-first century. Few of those whose names have come down to us, disappearing from the creation story for the benefit of the “great masters”.The erasure of women in the history of photography results from a long tradition of discredit. Original and autonomous creators, they have never ceased to document, question and transfigure the world, demonstrating that the camera can be a fantastic tool for emancipation. No experimentation or noise from the 19th and 20th centuries escaped them. To reproduce the diversity of the backgrounds of these women photographers, Luce Lebart and Marie Robert invited 160 authors from different parts of the world to contribute to this manifest work. The research led by Marie Robert and Luce Lebart was carried out with the support of the Rencontres d’Arles and Women In Motion, a Kering program that highlights the place of women in the arts and culture.
